Creative Clay, The Process
‘There is always a nervous excitement on opening the kiln and seeing for the first time how our work has come to life’.
At Creative Clay, each piece is made from rolled out slabs of clay which are assembled into Vases, Wall Hangings and Garden Planters. As each piece is formed, Raquel observes the clay in front of her and allows it to curl at the edges and even encourages little slits and cracks to form which add to the natural weathered look she wants to achieve. All the flowers and decoration are hand formed and when the clay is dry they are hand painted. Now it is time for the first firing. This is called a bisque, where the clay becomes ceramic. It is now less fragile and can be glazed in a transparent glaze and fired again to 1220 degrees Celsius. This gives the piece that lovely glossy, glass like finish.
Creative Clay ceramics retains the natural aesthetic and quality of being hand-made. There is a rustic simplicity to the work and the unique imperfections that each piece takes on during the glazing and firing process are celebrated.
